The moniker K2 originated back in the late 1980s when I worked for a student travel company called ALSG. At that time, we were slightly ahead of our time, and we had this nifty thing called Modemcity which was an intra-net, before the public internet existed. One thing we had was email, but we didn't call it email, we called it "modem mail". My username on Modemcity was "kathy2". This is because I was the second kathy to be added as a user. On the computer, the first Kathy had the username kathy. I was assigned the username kathy2. All of the users began calling each other by their usernames during our work-a-day lives, and at some point "kathy2" was shortened to "k2".
As time went on, I noticed that I was surrounded by Kathys whever I went. Work, social groups, everywhere. It became easier to refer to myself as "K2" to avoid having to constantly explain "which Kathy?"
I'm still working daily in the student travel business 22 years later.
